The U.S. Collegiate National Team and LSU rising sophomore catcher Micah Gibbs are bringing home the gold medal from the World Championships.
Gibbs scored the only run in Team USA’s 1-0 victory against Japan in Sunday’s gold medal game.
The Pflugerville, Texas, native scored the run on a pinch-hit single by Auburn freshman infielder Hunter Morris in the top of the 12th inning.
“It was such a great feeling when I saw that ball drop because I knew Gibbs was going to score,” Morris said in a release.
Gibbs finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk.
The 1-0 victory was Team USA’s sixth shutout of the summer.
This year’s U.S. squad set a new National Team record for lowest pitching staff ERA at 0.88, beating the 2003 team’s mark of 1.29.
Team USA completed an undefeated 24-0 season with the victory against Japan.
“This team’s record speaks for itself,” said National Team general manager Eric Campbell. “Every year is special, but I don’t know how we’ll be able to top what this team did.”
Gibbs and the Tigers also won 26 of their final 29 games this college baseball season, making Gibbs 50-3 since April 22.
