Ellen Hinson, 19-year-old mechanical engineering junior, died early Sunday morning after a single-vehicle accident.
Hinson was driving a Ford Ranger west on Louisiana Highway 42 when the road curved. She drove into a ditch, hit a utility pole and was partially thrown out of the vehicle, according to State Trooper Johnnie Brown.
Hinson, a New Orleans native, received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.
Brown said the state police are waiting on lab results to determine whether alcohol was involved in the accident.
Dean of Students K.C. White said Chi Alpha, a University Christian organization, held a memorial service Monday for Hinson at its café on Highland Road. She said it was a prayer service and an opportunity for people to hear about the loss.
