It’s 8 a.m. Saturday in Auburn, Ala., and I’m waiting in line for a Port-a-Potty on the set of ESPN’s College GameDay.Imagine my surprise when the door swings open and out comes ESPN personality Lee Corso. That’s when you know it’s going to be a great day.Fellow Daily Reveille reporter Rachel Whittaker and I received guest passes to the ESPN GameDay festivities near Jordan-Hare Stadium, which provided a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the show’s production. Our day began before sun rise — 5:30 a.m. to be exact. I’m normally the grouchiest person you could meet in the morning, but I didn’t even hit the snooze button. The excitement of meeting the GameDay crew definitely kept our adrenaline pumping during the hour drive from Montgomery, Ala., to the Auburn campus. The GameDay set-up at Auburn was definitely different from the Parade Grounds at LSU. I greatly preferred Auburn’s stadium backdrop and the cramped quarters that created a more intense atmosphere. The creativity displayed did not disappoint.Rachel and I first noticed the overwhelming number of corndog-related signs. I’m not sure of the exact origins of this phenomenon, but I’ve been told it originated from an Internet message board post about LSU fans smelling like corndogs. My initial response to the corndog reference: Is it that bad to smell like a corndog? I could think of a lot of worse-smelling things to be called. But Auburn fans really ran with this stereotype, evident by a massive corndog waving in the air.A few other signs that caught my attention: Lou Holtz’s face on a skeleton frame”AU Spread’s A Dud: But Our Coach Don’t Look Like Elmer Fudd””Mark Richt Wears Makeup!!!!!””Fear the Chop Block””Championships are like cars… Everyone wants one with LES MILES.”Two of my favorite signs were confiscated because security guards thought they were inappropriate. I disagree and would like to tip my Les Miles/Elmer Fudd hat to the fans who made the following:”Not so fast… Hey Corso, That’s what she said!””LSU: The Only School With A Pair of Balls” (with photos of the crystal ball trophies)Just minutes before the show went live, a young girl waited patiently with her parents by the security gate close to Corso’s trailer. She yelled, “Mr. Corso!” and gave him a box of homemade chocolate chip cookies. He promised to share the cookies with the crew and later actually ate them during the show, a show of kindness I’m sure was much appreciated. After the show, the crew stayed around to mingle backstage with a variety of fans and Auburn guests. Kirk Herbstreit bolted very quickly to catch a flight to Phoenix for the Arizona State vs. Georgia game. The game would have likely been the site for GameDay had Arizona State not lost to UNLV the week before. Rachel and I were disappointed not to meet Herbstreit, but we got the chance to mingle with the rest of the gang.Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and Desmond Howard graciously obliged our photo requests. We even got to sit behind the desk with Howard, which produced an impressive picture worth the honor of being Rachel’s new Facebook profile photo.I’m sure LSU fans would love to see GameDay in Baton Rouge later this season. I asked about the odds of them coming for the Georgia game, but one source said the Alabama game has the best chance given the Nick Saban rivalry. Clearly, it all depends on how the season unfolds.Maybe I’ll get the chance to share a Port-a-Potty with Corso again. —-Contact Amy Brittain at [email protected]
