Those bold enough to brave harsh weather Tuesday were able to buy ice, water and nonperishable food items from Albertsons supermarket on College Drive.Hard rain and wind did not stop hundreds of people from lining up outside the store, eagerly waiting their turn to purchase items.”I survived the storm,” said Mark Anderson, Baton Rouge resident and teacher in the Zachary school system. “I’m happy me and my family are safe, and I’ll wait all night in this rain to get food if I need to.”Anderson, along with dozens of other shoppers, expressed their disappointment when Albertons closed one side of the supermarket.”We’re closed on this side. Go to the other side of the store if you want to buy things,” employees shouted above wind gusts and rain.Alicia Roberts, a Baton Rouge native, was at the door when they decided to close the side.”I was right there,” she said. “I only needed a bag of ice for my baby’s food, but they wouldn’t sell it to me. Now I’m going to have to stand in that line on to get what I need.”The line on the Interstate 10 side of the store stretched from the door to College Drive. About 200 people with umbrellas, rain coats and ponchos lined up and braved the conditions.Albertsons’ management and employees declined to comment.Another store that decided to open Tuesday was B-Quik convenience store on Perkins Road. Cars lined up for a quarter of a mile in both directions, waiting for their chance to fill up with gas.Charles Thompson, crime scene tech with the Baton Rouge Police Department, directed traffic flow into and out of the station.”It’s been really hectic today,” Thompson said. “All these people are waiting to get gas, and I’m having to turn people away trying to cut the line and take shortcuts.”A Mobil gas truck was on site to refill the underground tanks if they ran out of gas.Walk-On’s opened its doors Tuesday afternoon, though with a very limited menu. The only three things on the menu were a classic hamburger with cheese, grilled chicken sandwich and chicken fingers. All were served with fries.Walk-On’s waitress Kayla Carter said the restaurant will remain open until 7 p.m. CC’s Community Coffee House on Burbank Drive and Brightside Bar and Grill on Brightside Drive also opened Tuesday.—-Contact Jay St. Pierre at [email protected]
