Devin Jamell Parker was indicted on two counts of second-degree murder Wednesday in the Dec. 13 slayings of two University graduate students in Edward Gay Apartments. The indictment comes about four months after the arrests of Parker and two other suspects, Casey Gathers and Michael Jermaine Lewis.Adam Haney, 19th judicial assistant district attorney and prosecutor for the case, said Gathers and Lewis were neither acquitted nor indicted, but their investigation is ongoing.”[The grand jury] came back and said there isn’t enough to go one way or another on this,” Haney said.Parker told members of the double homicide taskforce on May 21 that he was with Gathers and Lewis at the on-campus apartment when the two murders occurred, according to Parker’s arrest warrant.Parker also told the taskforce Gathers shot both victims.State prosecuters sought first-degree murder charges for each of the three suspects, but Haney said the grand jury decided to indict Parker on only two counts of second-degree murder.”They did it, and we’re pleased with what they did,” Haney said.Parker is now awaiting a date for his arraignment, where he will plead guilty or not guilty.”That will start the court process, and we’ll go forward from there,” Haney said. Second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. The victims, Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma, 31-year-old biology student, and Kiran Kumar Allam, 33-year-old chemistry student, were both from India.
