The LSU cross country team hosts its only home meet of the season this weekend at the LSU Tiger Cross Country Festival on Saturday at Highland Road Park.”On the men’s side we’re trying to win our home meet, that’s for sure,” said LSU coach Mark Elliott. “On the women’s side … from a personal standpoint they’re just not as talented as they were last year.”Elliott said he isn’t worried about his team competing at Highland Road Park, which suffered damage during Hurricane Gustav.”It was damaged, but in cross country basically you’re running with the elements,” Elliott said. “If there’s a tree to jump over you’ve just got to jump over it … whatever it is, it’s there for everyone to compete against.”The men’s team starts running at 9:30 a.m., and the women compete at 10 a.m.Senior Christina Porter said members of the track and field team will be at the meet to show to support for the cross country runners.”It’s the first time that they get to actually see us cross country runners,” Porter said. “A lot of friends and family actually get to come and watch us. It’s more exciting to run around people cheering for you than it is at any other meet.”Elliott said the most important thing about this meet is the chance for every member of the team to compete.—-Contact Robert Stewart at [email protected]
