Several top committed and uncommitted high school recruits — including star quarterback Russell Shepard — spent their Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.Stavion Lowe, Chris Davenport and Chris Faulk have already committed to LSU and attended the game. Uncommitted recruits Andre Debose, Dyron Dye, Ray Ray Armstrong, Barkevious Mingo and Darrington Sentimore also spent the day on campus.”It was amazing,” said Shepard, who is already committed to LSU. “I got to meet a lot of my teammates that I’m going to be with for four years.”Shepard is rated as a consensus five-star player by recruiting services including Rivals.com, which lists him as the No. 4 overall player in the country. So far in the high school football season, Shepard has not disappointed many fans. He amassed more than 400 yards of offense by himself last week, throwing for 169 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 257 yards and another three touchdowns.Shepard said it was a great experience to walk out on the field during pregame warm-ups and hear fans chanting his name.”They were so happy for me to be at this school, it was amazing,” Shepard said. “Once I started walking on campus and people started to warm up to me, coach had to kind of pull me away from everyone. I think sometimes people forget that I’m still a high school athlete.”The five-star phenom is quickly gaining recognition around the country as LSU’s primary recruit. He’s even helping to land other high-profile athletes including his cousin, five-star safety prospect Craig Loston.”[Loston] is big up on LSU,” Shepard said. “We’ll get [Loston], and I’m pretty sure on that.”Shepard said he keeps in close contact with several of the prospects LSU is recruiting, calling them every Friday or Saturday. He mentioned he recently spoke with Jamarkus McFarland, Rivals.com’s third-ranked prospect in the nation. The five-star defensive tackle is expected to choose from among LSU, Texas and Oklahoma.”I talked to Jamarkus right before I went up to LSU,” Shepard said. “I was going to bring him up there with me. But Jamarkus had a game that Saturday, so that’s why I didn’t bring him.”Shepard has made it his personal goal to help assemble the best recruiting class possible.”The [recruits] that I’m really pushing for right now are Craig Loston, Jamarkus McFarland, Andre Debose and Rueben Randle,” Shepard said. “With those four right there, I feel like we could establish ourselves as the No. 1 recruiting class in the country and have — if not the best class to come to LSU — probably one of the best classes to come through a single team in the NCAA period.”Bastrop’s Randle is Rivals’ fifth-rated prospect in the country and is rated as the top wide receiver prospect in the nation. He will likely choose from among LSU, Alabama and Miami.Debose, of Sanford, Fla., is rated as the third-best wide receiver in the nation, according to Rivals.com and is believed to choose from among LSU, Florida, Florida State and Miami.”I talk to [Randle] every now and then, not as much as I talk to the other ones, but I talk to [Randle] a lot,” Shepard said.Although Randle is ranked as the top wide receiver in the nation, he has mostly been playing quarterback for Bastrop this season.”When I talk to [Randle] I mention that he’s somebody that I would love to throw to and somebody that I would love to help LSU stay at the top of the SEC and hopefully win a couple of SEC titles and a national championship,” Shepard said.—- Contact Tyler Harvey at [email protected]
