Editor’s note: This editorial contains language that may be offensive to some people.The student section at LSU’s most recent home game against North Texas sent a strong message to the band and the school’s administrators — students are ready for a comeback of the famous ‘Oh Wee Oh’ chant.Every time the Tigers scored a touchdown against the Mean Green, large portions of the student section started the chant. And each time the chant began, the band soon followed with a different song of its own to drown out University students.Well, we agree with the students — it’s time to bring the song and chant back.The “Oh Wee Oh” chant got a bad reputation last season when South Carolina came to town. Enough students manipulated the chant so it was loud and clear the student body was saying, ‘Oh Wee Oh, you suck, Cocks.”Admittedly, that was a bad move; and as a result, the song was taken away. But the band’s decision to stop playing the song was just as poor.It’s pointless for the band to stop playing certain songs because some students ruin it for everybody.First, Tiger Rag was scrapped.Now, it’s the “Oh Wee Oh” chant.What’s next? Is the first down song almost out the door because students say “Kick their ass” instead of “LSU” at the end?The Daily Reveille — and similar publications around the country — have printed stories in the past year showing student sections at athletic events around the country are dealing with these kinds of issues.One particular article that printed in USA Today last Nov. 1 said many universities have taken different approaches to calming students’ bad language. Kansas sent out e-mails asking fans to watch their mouths; Florida kicks people out of its stadium for poor language.Our advice is for the band to give the song a test run at an upcoming home game. Tell the students the song is coming back, and make it clear that if the foul language comes back too, then the deal is off.Let’s find some middle ground and fix the problem.—-Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected]
