The launch of the Campus Life Engagement and Recognition Leaders Certification Program will be delayed because of Hurricane Gustav’s disruption to the schedule, David Gunn, assistant director of Campus Life, said. The year-long program, which was scheduled to begin this fall, requires students to attend workshops and participate in community events to become certified leaders by the Office of Campus Life.”I would rather push back the launch of a new program than have its initial offering take place under confusing circumstances,” Gunn said. The new launch of the CLEAR leadership certification program is set for this spring. The certification program requires students to attend 17 events or activities in different departments on campus such as the Center for Academic Success and the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Disability Services over the course of an academic year. The events are already scheduled events being put on by the departments.”We are not asking departments to do any more work,” Gunn said. “Students are asked to attend events they are already doing.”Hurricane Gustav forced several campus events to change dates, times and locations, which is an obstacle to the CLEAR leadership program, Gunn said.Because the program combines different offices’ and departments’ calendars, a large amount of planning is required to make sure students are not confused, he said.Students already registered for the program will receive an e-mail thanking them for their interest and telling them the launch of the program is going to be delayed, Gunn said.Jared Olsen, music education freshman, does not think the delay will hurt attendance in the program.”If you want to get involved now, you’ll want to get involved then,” he said.Michael Young, undecided freshman, said he thinks the delay might help the program because it will give more time for students to become aware of CLEAR leadership.”They will be able to advertise more,” he said.Students can register for the CLEAR leadership program on the University’s Web site.—-
