Michigan wanted him. ESPN wants him. Heck, even I’m starting to want him.If he keeps winning, every college football program will be wishing LSU coach Les Miles was leading their team. But once upon a time, fans were questioning former Athletic Director Skip Bertman’s decision to hire the coach. “He can’t win the big game,” people posted on numerous Internet message boards. Many of my friends said he’s too quiet and won’t get in the players’ faces. Yet more than three years after the Elyria, Ohio, native traded in the orange and black of Oklahoma State for a purple and gold polo, he continues to rack up wins and succeed where many thought he would fail — the Southeastern Conference.Miles has proven, time and again, he can hang with the big boys of the college football world. After watching LSU win against Auburn on Saturday night, Miles and the Tigers — until proven otherwise — might be the kings of the college football world.I watched the game with a few of my friends, one of whom has always been one of Miles’ biggest critics. He’s beyond help. He’s got Sabanitis — a rare form of a man crush on Alabama coach Nick Saban that skews a patient’s vision into thinking he’s a competent coach.Since I rarely delete e-mails in my PAWS account, I looked up a message he sent me nearly two-and-a-half years ago.His subject said it all: “10 reasons Miles is a horrible coach and should be fired.”I leaned over, showed him the message and said “You’re a moron.”Not only is he a better coach than former LSU coaches Saban and Paul Dietzel, but he’s been able to silence his critics one win at a time.Miles has posted a 37-6 record during the three years he’s coached the Tigers.Dietzel went 46-24-3 during the seven years he coached LSU. Saban went 39-13 during the four years he was at the helm.Tack on 21 conference victories, 14 wins against top 25 teams and a 9-3 record against top-10 opponents; and I dare you to tell me he can’t win the big one. But don’t let the 9-3 record fool you. Miles hasn’t lost to a top-10 team since Oct. 7, 2006, when the Tigers bounced around like toddlers in a space walk against Florida and lost 23-10.Oh yeah, and he’s also guided LSU to three bowl game wins, including the Bowl Championship Series national title last season.CLUTCH!!!With all the “FUSC” bumper stickers I’ve seen around Baton Rouge, think about this — the 37 wins Miles has accumulated since taking over in 2005 is more than any program during that span. Take that Pete Carroll — who has 36 wins during that span. USC can’t be No. 1 in everything.—-Contact Jay St. Pierre at [email protected]
