LSU’s soccer team cracked the top 10 in a national poll Monday for the first time in team history.LSU is ranked No. 9 by Soccer America after beating Oklahoma, 4-0, Friday in Norman, Okla. The Tigers are now the highest ranked Southeastern Conference team in the Soccer America Poll for the fourth-straight week.”Everyone’s really excited and just so happy and proud to be a part of it,” said senior forward Roslyn Jones.LSU is off to the best start in school history at 6-0, beating their previous mark of 5-0 set in 2003 and 2007.The team won its first SEC Western Division crown and notched its first ever NCAA tournament victory against Samford, 1-0, in 2007.LSU coach Brian Lee said the team wanted to crack the top 10 before heading into SEC play.”Polls kind of go out the window at that point.” Lee said. “Our entire focus is on winning an SEC championship, and hopefully the girls will put themselves in position to do that.”LSU is also ranked No. 17 by Soccer Times and No. 15 by Soccer Buzz, but they have not released updated soccer polls yet this week. The Tigers were ranked No. 11 by Soccer America last week.”We have a lot of upperclassmen — juniors and seniors,” Jones said. “We’ve focused on this goal for a while.”Lee said the upperclassmen have seen “everything there is from a game standpoint.””Our first big recruiting class are juniors,” Lee said. “They were good players, but they were talented players who’ve become even better athletes and soccer players.”LSU takes a Mississippi road swing this weekend with games at Mississippi State on Friday and Ole Miss on Sunday in their first SEC matches this season.”We’re anxious and ready to play SEC teams,” Jones said. “We want to win the SEC.”Lee said the SEC championship “will be won on the road.””The team that does the best on the road is probably going to end up the winner,” he said.—-Contact Robert Stewart at [email protected]
