Three additional racquetball courts reopened Monday at the University Student Recreation Complex.Officials closed the courts until ceilings were checked for damage after Hurricane Gustav, said Tricia Milford-Hoyt, University Recreation assistant of marketing and membership at the UREC.Victoria Johnson, guest service specialist, said it’s not as crowded because when the rented racquetball courts are filled, there are now three more racquetball courts available.”There was actually a day I came and I wasn’t able to play because of the limited number of courts,” said Derek Rayburn, chemical engineering sophomore. There are 10 racquetball courts and one squash court inside. One racquetball court remains closed to hold equipment, Milford-Hoyt said. Each court holds two to four people.Up to 180 students play racquetball daily Monday through Thursday, Milford-Hoyt said.”Racquetball is pretty popular,” Milford-Hoyt said.”They were really crowded, and we had to wait a few times but it is great now,” said Mitch Harrison, mechanical engineering junior.Wilson Sporting Goods donated 37 new and lightly used professional level rackets, Milford-Hoyt said. Rackets retail cost is $200.”They actually have a grip on them which is good,” Harrison said.Racquetball courts and equipment can be rented at the equipment desk at the UREC. Equipment can be reserved 24 hours in advance.”It’s a great sport,” Rayburn said.—-Contact Mary Gonzalez at [email protected]
