Student Government approved a bill Wednesday night to host a “Day of Appreciation” to honor University students, faculty and staff who volunteered their services during Hurricane Gustav. SG plans to allocate up to $700 from the Senate Contingency Account to fund the “special day of programming,” which will include music and freezie pops to be distributed at various locations on campus. The date is set for Sept. 16, pending approval from SG President Colorado Robertson. SG Senator Chris Sellers, University Center for Freshman Year, submitted the bill. “Freezie pops are something that students will be more than thrilled to get,” Sellers said. “Especially since it’s been so hot the past few days.”SG Senator Chris Brown, College of Engineering, said freezie pops would not be the best way to show appreciation. “Not all the volunteers were LSU students, and not all the volunteers will actually receive a freezie pop,” Brown said. “This is a misappropriation of student fees.”SG Senator Kyle Chandler, University Center for Freshman Year, also spoke out against the bill. “As I understand it, this was the worst natural disaster in recent Baton Rouge history,” Chandler said. “It would send the wrong message, and it doesn’t show the gravity of the situation.”Chandler suggested the naming of a tree on campus in honor of the victims and those who volunteered. SG also approved a resolution to “urge and request” the number of Saturdays available for professors to schedule classes be limited to two. The resolution suggested only allowing professors Oct. 4 and Oct. 18 as options for Saturday classes. Currently, professors can also choose to schedule class Sept. 20 and Oct. 11, which are days the football team is set to play Auburn and Florida, respectively.Pending approval from Robertson, the resolution will be transmitted to Chancellor Michael Martin, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Astrid Merget and System President John Lombardi as a representation of SG’s opinion. SG Senator Brett Jackson, Arts and Sciences, opposed the resolution. “There are several major elections being held on [Oct. 4],” Jackson said. “Also, there’s an LSAT that day.”Voting for the Baton Rouge Metro Council District 12 race, in which Jackson is a candidate, is scheduled for Oct. 4.- – – -Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
