The Rules Committee voted unanimously, with one abstention, to approve revisions made to Student Government’s constitution and bylaws on Tuesday. One notable change to the constitution is the inclusion of part-time students in SG representation, said Drew Prestridge, chairman of the Rules Committee. “The way it used to work, colleges would get two Senators for every 1,000 full-time students,” Prestridge said. “We wanted to include part-time students, too. So now the number of Senators representing each college may go up.”Prestridge also noted students would be interested in a change to voter eligibility.Students who are registered for at least part-time enrollment status by the time of a SG election would now be eligible to vote. “The constitution has it that students have to be registered at the beginning of the semester,” Prestridge said. Revisions to the bylaws include setting the official installation of the president and vice president to the Senate Spring Organizational Session and changing the amount of times an Executive Branch member reports to the Senate from once a semester to three times. “Once a semester was just not enough,” Prestridge said. If the changes to the constitution are approved, they will appear on the fall ballot for students to vote on. If the changes to the bylaws are approved, they will be submitted to SG President Colorado Robertson for final approval. The Summer Planning Committee met eight times during the summer to revise SG’s governing documents. “Our documents govern what Student Government does, and what Student Government does directly affects the student body,” Prestridge said July 31. “There were a lot of parts that were inconsistent, vague and confusing.”The decision to examine the documents arose from “some instances that occurred recently,” Prestridge said July 31. “After the election, a person came forward with complaints about Colorado’s procedure,” Prestridge said. “But because there were inconsistencies between our Election Code and our Constitution, we couldn’t even hear it.”—-Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
