The LSU Athletic Department spent Tuesday accessing Hurricane Gustav’s damage to facilities and potential effect on Saturday’s football game in Tiger Stadium.Although classes have been canceled until Monday, the Athletic Department has not yet made a decision on the Tigers’ 7 p.m. game Saturday against Troy.A decision is expected early Wednesday morning, and the Tigers will practice Wednesday afternoon, Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette said. The LSU team met with coach Les Miles at 1 p.m. Tuesday and went through a walkthrough in the indoor facility.The Athletic Department also released information Tuesday about Gustav’s significant damage to various athletics facilities.”It’s unbelievable,” Bonnette said. “I’ve been around a long time and never seen damage like this before. We have tremendous resources and great people, and we’ll come through this.”Tiger Stadium’s west side sustained damage to awnings over Stadium Club seating and glass coverings. The north scoreboard was slightly damaged and the field and stands are covered with a “considerable amount” of debris, according to the release.The LSU Natatorium, Carl Maddox Field House, softball stadium construction project and football indoor practice facility sustained roof damage. The Athletic Department also reported fencing damage at the Dub Robinson Tennis Stadium and Charles McClendon Practice Facility for football.The LSU Soccer Complex press box is apparently ruined, while the scoreboard and fencing also incurred damages.The department reported “minimal impact” on the new baseball field construction site.”You hate to see your facilities hit like this,” said Senior Associate Athletic Director Herb Vincent. “It’s part of what all of Baton Rouge is going through, but it’s a shame to see the damage like that. We’re going to make the best of it.”The LSU women’s basketball, volleyball and soccer teams are all expected to return to Baton Rouge by Wednesday at the latest. The teams were scattered across the continent after participating in various weekend tournaments.The women’s basketball team is trying to get home from Vancouver, British Columbia. Coach Van Chancellor told The Daily Reveille late Monday that his team was scheduled to fly into Houston late Tuesday evening.A bus has been sent to Memphis, Tenn., to drive the volleyball team home, Vincent said Tuesday.The soccer team is scheduled to fly back Wednesday from Chicago.—-Contact Amy Brittain at [email protected].
