Who lives in a pineapple on MTV?
SpongeBob SquarePants!
Wait, what?
Is this guy on drugs?
Though my pain medication can make me a bit dizzy at times, it has yet to skew my vision, and I’m still able to read the TV station logos at the bottom, right-hand corner of the screen.
Whether it’s ESPN, CBS, NBC, MTV or any other logo, no drugs I’m currently taking alter my vision.
And what I saw shocked me.
It was about 1:30 a.m., and I couldn’t sleep, so I decided to turn on the TV. After flipping through a few stations I heard the SpongeBob theme song.
It’s my nephew’s favorite show, and since he lives in Albuquerque, N.M., I only see him once or twice a year. For that reason – and because he’s by far one of my favorite people in the world – I decided to listen to the tune.
I figured I had just flipped to Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, but when I put my glasses on, I found out it was MTV.
That’s right – Music Television.
What the heck is SpongeBob doing on MTV?
To make certain I wasn’t crazy, I did a little research and found this has been a hot topic on a few television blogs for the past month or so.
I – along with every other MTV viewer – have dealt with a lot of B.S. that MTV officials continue to put on their station, but there comes a limit.
Yes, I’m tired of hearing about shows like “From G’s to Gents,” “The X Effect,” “The Hills” and “My Super Sweet 16,” but what really rubs me the wrong way is that it seems MTV has gone blind – or stupid.
Last time I checked MTV’s target audience is teenagers and people in their early 20s.
I think it’s safe to say that unless they have a child, no one in that age group watches SpongeBob.
The only reason I can fathom MTV is showing this childish show is because Nickelodeon and MTV are both Viacom produced television networks, meaning the same company owns the rights to all the shows televised on these stations.
In other words, MTV can televise SpongeBob, Jimmy Neutron, Rugrats or any of its other shows on MTV and vice versa.
But just because you have this luxury doesn’t mean you need to take advantage of it.
I can’t say I didn’t see this coming. This has been something that has been in the works for some time now.
Since the early 2000s, MTV has been on a slow decline in its quality.
Growing up, MTV was one of my favorite stations because, for most of the day, music videos filled the station.
But now, the only music show on the network is Total Request Live.
Go figure – a station, whose initials stand for MUSIC Television has just one, one-hour show devoted to music. That’s a disgrace.
Here’s an idea MTV: why don’t you go ahead and rename your station.
If you’re not going to show music, you shouldn’t name your station MTV.
I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come. Trust me; no one wants to see someone live in a pineapple on MTV.
