An afternoon rainstorm forced the LSU football team to scrimmage inside Tuesday rather than in Tiger Stadium as scheduled.
Tuesday’s scrimmage was the team’s final preseason scrimmage before the Aug. 30 season opener against Appalachian State.
“I would have liked to have been in the stadium only for the use of the clock and the comfort of the surroundings,” said coach Les Miles. “That’s the only thing I would have liked to have had differently. We ran exactly what we wanted to run.”
Redshirt freshman quarterback Jarrett Lee did not participate Tuesday after missing Monday’s practice because of back spasms.
Miles said Lee “wanted to go” but the coaching staff decided not to push his recovery.
Miles said sophomore quarterback Andrew Hatch and true freshman Jordan Jefferson “played well,” completing about 55 percent of their pass attempts.
“It was a very productive day for those guys,” he said. “I like the freshman quarterback [Jefferson]. The freshman quarterback continues to get better and continues to compete. He’s a guy that can actually look to play at times.”
The first-team offense took about 35 live snaps with junior running backs Keiland Williams and Charles Scott each getting five carries.
Miles was pleased with his team’s effort during post-scrimmage conditioning drills.
“The team is in very good shape,” Miles said. “We ran very hard after, and they knocked it out.”
INJURY UPDATES
Senior center Brett Helms (calf) and senior defensive tackle Charles Alexander (hamstring) once again sat out because of injuries.
Miles said he expects Helms to return as soon as Thursday, while Alexander could be held out until Monday. Both have missed practice for more than a week.
Senior linebacker Darry Beckwith participated in conditioning drills but did not scrimmage because of a shoulder injury.
