The quarterback battle has now been narrowed to two.
Coach Tom O’Brien announced at Wednesday’s press conference that freshman Mike Glennon will redshirt the 2008-2009 season.
The decision means the starting job is now up for grabs between graduate student Daniel Evans and redshirt freshman Russell Wilson.
O’Brien said he and his coaching staff had noticed in the past two scrimmages that Evans and Wilson may be more ready to handle certain situations. Tuesday’s scrimmage, O’Brien said, centered around last-minute drive situations.
“While he’s an exceptional talent, he’s just not ready to handle some of the situations,” O’Brien said.
The coaching staff did not release passing stats from the scrimmage, but O’Brien said he and the coaches decided on Glennon status after last night’s scrimmage.
“We got together [with Glennon] and talked about it and he’s fine with it,” O’Brien said.
With the starting job down to Evans and Wilson, O’Brien said Beck moves to third string. But the coach said he is still in no hurry to name a starter.
“We will do it when we have to exchange with South Carolina,” O’Brien said. “No sense rushing what we’re doing right now.”
