Color, creativity and self-expression join forces in 2008 to produce a year of style where almost anything goes. Kate Burns, University alumna and owner of “Material Girl” boutique, said the hottest colors of the season offer a broad range from neutral colors like sand stone to brilliant neon. When it comes to dresses, the asymmetrical, one shoulder style is dominating with prints such as florals and worldly influenced tribal patterns, Burns said. “It is definitely time to put away all basic black and white pieces and fill your closets with bright hues,” said Melissa Mamelli, apparel and merchandising junior. Mamelli emphasized that a variety of psychedelic graphics, artsy splashes of paint, ethnic designs and animal prints were seen on the runways as well as sheer fabrics such as chiffon, gauze and tulle. Tina Trupiano, apparel and merchandising and Spanish senior said the eclectic trends of 2008 are all about personal expression. “We have hip hop mixed with rock and prep all in to one,” Trupiano said. Burns emphasized the transition from the solid pant look to faded styles. “When it comes to jeans, we’re seeing a big deviation from the past few years’ trends,” Burns said. “There are a lot of bleached washes, super bell-bottoms, flares and high-rise coming out.” Mamelli said neon bags, chunky heels, wedges and unique belts are the ultimate accessories. She also pointed out another fashion trend: designer clothing obtainable by everyone. “Isaac Mizrahi and Loeffler Randall can be found at Target and Simply Vera by Vera Wang at Kohl’s,” Mamelli said. “Fantastic celebrity clothing and shoe lines are also available everywhere for affordable prices. This is great for us college students who wish to wear the designer looks but can’t afford them just yet.”
