Several University students sacrificed their Saturday to give back to the Baton Rouge community.
The Office of Multicultural Affairs hosted the 22nd Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
Volunteers helped clean the Charity Christian Center on West McKinley Street. Charity Christian Center is a school, church and day care.
Volunteers met at 8 a.m. in the Student Union’s Atchafalaya Room to participate in the event.
After organizing all participants into groups, they were shuttled to Charity Christian Center.
Curtis Parker, coordinator for Cross-Cultural Affairs, said the volunteers would help paint classrooms and clean up the exterior of the center.
“This is one of our biggest events for the whole MLK celebration,” said Christina Allen, team co-leader for the event.
University students were eager to participate in the event.
Kristina McCray, psychology junior, said it is a good way to help the community and to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.
“It’s for a good cause,” said Tasha Womack, kinesiology sophomore. “The Baton Rouge community needs all the help it can get.”
Courtney Boss, biochemistry sophomore and Baton Rouge native, said if we do not do it, no one else will.
“[College] is a perfect time in our life,” Boss said. “We have a pretty free schedule. All we have to do is focus on ourselves, school and giving back.”
