A document outlining qualifications for the University’s next athletic director will be discussed 3 p.m. Friday. Five search committee members prepared a “Position Specification and Candidate Profile” listing the desired characteristics of potential candidates to replace Athletic Director Skip Bertman, who vacates the position June 30. These subcommittee members, headed by Louisiana Board of Regents general counsel Connie Koury, will meet Friday to approve the draft. “It’s not a document that’s to be followed slavishly or woodenly, but it’s a rough set of benchmarks and criteria that committee can use,” said Jack Weiss, committee chairman and Paul M. Hebert Law Center chancellor. Weiss, who reviewed the subcommittee’s profile draft, said Parker Executive Search representatives assisted by commenting on the profile draft. Once the draft is approved, the Atlanta-based search firm will assist in circulating the profile to all prospective candidates, he said. According to a draft version of the profile, an ideal athletic director should possess “senior level administrative experience in intercollegiate athletics management” or a “closely allied field.” The director should also strictly adhere to NCAA and Southeastern Conference regulations while promoting academic excellence among student athletes. Other key qualifications include the ability to understand “gender equity and diversity,” develop “new sources of revenue,” and comprehend “new media relations and contracts.” Weiss said he is unsure when the entire 14-member search committee will meet. The committee first convened Jan. 18 and approved a Code of Ethics. Weiss said the committee aims to have a choice presented to the chancellor by the end of March.
