The college football season may be finished for the Tigers, but LSU fans will be roaring in Tiger Stadium on Saturday for the National Championship Celebration. Details for the festivities are still being finalized, but the celebration will feature the presentation of championship and individual trophies to the Tigers, video of season highlights and performances by the Tiger Band. LSU football coach Les Miles and other distinguished guests will attend the celebration. The event coordinators are also pursuing the opportunity to have Mike the Tiger at the event, according to Eddie Nunez, associate athletic director for project development. The stadium gates will open at 1 p.m., and the celebration will begin at 2:30 p.m. No admission will be charged. Nunez said he is expecting between 40,000 and 70,000 people to attend, but an exact number is unavailable because the event coordinators are not distributing tickets. Saturday’s event will not be the first celebration the University has held for a championship victory. Nunez said Tiger Stadium opened to a crowd of about 30,000 to 40,000 fans in 2003 to celebrate the Tigers’ win in the BCS title game. Food, drinks and official national championship merchandise will be on sale in front the Pete Maravich Assembly Center starting at noon. Parking and on-campus traffic will be restricted for the event. Lots A, B and H near the stadium and Lot K across from the Football Operations Center will be closed. Lot O will also be closed because of a track and field meet at the Field House. In addition, North and South Stadium drives will be blocked off.
