LSU senior sprinter Richard Thompson was named National Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field Association, it was announced on Tuesday.
Thompson joins former LSU standouts Walter Davis (2002) and Xavier Carter (2006) as the only Tigers to win the award.
He was also named the Southeastern Conference’s 2008 Indoor and Outdoor Runner of the Year earlier this season.
Thompson won the 100-meter dash Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and finished second in the 200-meter dash Saturday.
Thompson also won the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 15, as well as sweeping the Southeastern Conference crowns in the 60 and 100-meter dash.
