The LSU men’s and women’s track and field teams both defended their NCAA Mideast Regional titles Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Lady Tigers have now won five of the past six regional championships while the men’s team has won three regional titles in a row.
LSU earned 24 automatic NCAA bids over the two-day meet.
“When it’s all said anddone, we’ll have everybody at the NCAA meet that should score points for ourteams,” LSU coach Dennis Shaver said in a news release. “We tried not to overdo it too much this weekend, and our athletesresponded by doing what they needed to do to qualify.”
Senior sprinter Richard Thompson swept both the 100-meter and 200-meter titles with times of 9.97 seconds and 20.21 seconds, respectively.
Senior Kelly Baptiste also won titles in the 100- and 200-meters. She posted times of 10.97 and 22.67 seconds, respectively.
LSU also added four automatic qualifiers in the triple jump and pole vault.
The 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa.
