Senior guard Garrett Temple can relate to freshman guard Chris Bass.Bass followed his brother Brandon to LSU, where the elder Bass was Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2004 and SEC Player of the Year in 2005.Temple followed both elder brother Collis III and father Collis Jr. to LSU.And even though Garrett Temple has been with the program for four seasons, he still gets confused with his family members.”People still call me Collis,” Garrett Temple said. “Somebody called me Collis [the other day].”Chris Bass is competing for playing time at the point guard position behind sophomore starter Bo Spencer, a position Garrett Temple played last season. Both Temple and Bass said they haven’t talked much about Bass following his brother to LSU.”What I will tell him if he ever asks is that he needs to … be his own guy,” Temple said. “Respect and honor that his brother had a great two years here, but create his own legacy.”LSU men’s basketball coach Trent Johnson said he hasn’t heard or discussed much about Chris being Brandon Bass’ little brother.”From Chris’ standpoint and from our basketball team’s standpoint and from my standpoint, we’re not talking about that,” Johnson said. “Brandon’s gone.”Johnson is tough on his point guards, pushing them more than any other player on the team.”That’s the most demanding position to play on this basketball team,” he said. “It’s because of the multiple reads you have at the offensive end, and defensively, the point of attack is where everything is going to be predicated on.”But Bass isn’t intimidated by the pressure.”You’ve got to be the coach on the floor besides the coach,” Bass said. “I just look at that as another challenge, just got to run the team.”Bass said Temple was his roommate during preseason practice. He said Temple helped him learn the playbook during the offseason.”It’s a great experience from having Garrett,” Bass said. “He played point guard here for like the last three years.”Temple has played with both Chris and Brandon at LSU. He redshirted his freshman year in 2005, Brandon’s last year at LSU.He said Brandon and Chris have different personalities off the court.”Brandon was a real shy, just stay-to-himself guy,” he said. “Chris clowns and stuff in the locker room or is being clowned on. He’s a fun-loving guy.”Temple said he’s heard fans compare the two because of their relation, but the comparisons have been few.”People might compare him — not as much as they may have compared me and Collis because Chris and Brandon play two totally different positions,” Temple said. “People are going to call him little Brandon, little Bass. I have heard that, but not as much as I would’ve thought.”Chris Bass said his older brother wanted him to go to LSU but didn’t pressure him.”It was really my decision that I wanted to come here,” Chris Bass said. “He was like, ‘Just take your time, and whatever school you think is the best for you, I’m going to be 100 percent behind you.'”Bass said he has always liked LSU and wanted to stay home so his family could see him play in college.”I always came to the games when my brother was here,” he said. “I always just dreamed that I wanted to play for LSU.”And as for following his big brother?”A lot of people asked me if I am going to live up to the expectations he did,” he said. “I’ll be like ‘No, I’m just going to try to do the best I can, to help the team out and try to be the best player I can be.'”—-Contact Robert Stewart at [email protected]
