LSU co-defensive coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto has been hired as Northwestern State’s head coach, according to the Baton Rouge Business Report.
Michael Bonnette, LSU sports information director, said the potential move is still not official.
“They haven’t announced anything,” Bonnette said. “All the people trying to break this story are premature.”
Doug Ireland, Northwestern Sate sports information, also said nothing has officially been done, but he expects the Demons coaching position to be filled soon.
“No offer has been made, and obviously no offer has been accepted,” Ireland said. “Not at 5:43 or 6:02 or 6:07 or whatever time it is, but we certainly look forward to an announcement hopefully very soon.”
OPPORTUNITIES
Both Peveto and co-defensive coordinator Doug Mallory have interviewed for positions at other schools, LSU coach Les Miles confirmed Wednesday.Miles said he spent time working with the linebackers during Wednesday’s practice because Peveto had not returned from an interview with Northwestern State.”He should be back very soon,” Miles said Wednesday evening.Peveto flew to his Northwestern State interview on an LSU plane and missed practice because of “plane issues,” Miles said.Mallory has interviewed to be defensive coordinator at New Mexico, and Miles said there are no hard feelings toward either coordinator.”One of [the opportunities] is a great friend — coach Mallory’s — and one is an opportunity to be a head coach,” Miles said. “I can’t say, ‘No,’ to those things. We have good coaches. Our coaches are sought after, and that happens.”No other LSU coaches have asked for permission to interview with other programs, Miles said.WEIGHING THE OPTIONLSU continued to prepare for No. 14 Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense Wednesday, as the Tigers-Yellow Jackets matchup in the Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A Bowl nears.”It’s really interesting,” Miles said. “You have to be very disciplined. You have to understand the calls. You have to understand what your responsibilities are. We’re certainly not there now, but we certainly are a lot further ahead than we were three days ago.”Miles said he’s been working hands-on with the defense, particularly in Peveto’s absense Wednesday.”I had some option experience, so I’m over there,” Miles said. “I don’t know that I’m tremendously helpful, but I’m making sure that there’s attention to detail in certain aspects of the defensive gameplan.”Miles said redshirt freshman cornerback John Williams has been running the option for the scout team.”He’s doing a great job, and [senior walk-on Phillip] Pigott is a great fullback,” Miles said.QUARTERBACKSSophomore quarterback Andrew Hatch has still not returned to practice, and his freshmen counterparts continued to share time in practice, Miles said.”Both Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee got a lot of reps today,” Miles said.GAMEPLANNINGMiles said he plans to have the majority of his gameplan in place before the Tigers head to Atlanta on Christmas Day.”We would want to get it all in,” he said. “There’s little bits and pieces that you throw out or you add, but they’re small pieces.”The Tigers will continue to work on that gameplan until breaking Monday.”We had a good workout Sunday, and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday — four days in a row,” Miles said. “We’ll probably pull it in a little bit tomorrow and get the legs back, and hit it hard through the weekend and culminate with a scrimmage situation on Monday morning.”GRADUATIONMiles also said he was proud of the Tigers who will graduate Friday.”Some guys are first-generation college graduates and fight like heck and didn’t necessarily have the understanding of what it was going to take,” he said. “You just root for them. It’s a great piece of our society. This is a spot where you can gain skill, you can gain credential, you compete and I think it’s wonderful.”
