METAIRIE — Four LSU UREC flag football teams competed in the 2008 American Collegiate Intramural Sports Flag Football National Championships in Lafreniere Park in Metairie on Monday. The intramural flag football teams representing LSU were the LSU Women’s runner-ups, the LSU Co-Rec champions, the LSU Men’s champions and the LSU Men’s runner-ups. The tournament began Sunday, and will last until a champion is crowned in all three divisions on Wednesday. The LSU Women’s team completed pool play with a 1-2 record and qualified as the third seed in its pool. The women struggled against West Florida and Texas State, but managed to beat Virginia-Wise, 20-6.The women will have a rematch against Texas State in the first round of the playoffs at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.”We had a rough time playing defense against them,” said LSU women’s team captain Lauren Simoneaux. “We need to prepare more plays and get our defense together a little more.”LSU’s Co-Rec champions, the Dunkin’ Donuts, also earned third seed in its pool with a 1-2 record. The Dunkin’ Donuts started off the tournament with a win against North Carolina Chapel Hill, 6-0, but faltered 21-10 against Ohio University and 25-0 against North Texas.Dunkin’ Donuts safety Louis Haar said his team had the lead or was tied in all three games at halftime, but Ohio University and North Texas managed to outplay the team in the second half.”I don’t think we come out doing anything different (at halftime),” Haar said. “I don’t know if we lose energy, focus or what it is, but it seemed to hurt us today.”The Dunkin’ Donuts will play the Nebraska-Lincoln (2-0) team at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs. The LSU men’s teams, the Real Dynasty and Acacia, played in the 22-team men’s division. The Acacia team went 1-2 with a win against Alabama Birmingham and earned a spot in the 15-team playoffs against Texas Pan American (2-0) at 10:45 a.m Tuesday. The Real Dynasty, on the other hand, lost to both North Florida and North Carolina A&T, 28-14 and 31-13, respectively. Of the four teams representing LSU, the Real Dynasty was the only team not to advance to the playoffs.”I wish we were guaranteed three games,” said Real Dynasty team captain Van English. “The two teams we played were really good, and both had a lot of speed.”English said his team, who was the runner-up in the LSU intramural league, might add a few members for next season, but his core team that he’s had the past few years will try to stick together.”We had won (LSU’s championships) the two years previously, and we were going for our third in a row,” English said. “Maybe we’ll add a couple new additions next year.”Tamara Jarrett, the director of LSU’s UREC, said the universities typically send their league champions to the tournament, but other teams can qualify into the ACIS Flag Football National Championships by winning a regional qualifier. She said LSU pays its teams’ entry fees and travel expenses.Jarrett, who has been part of the tournament since she competed in college, said a lot of teams are intrigued to come to New Orleans for the tournament so they can celebrate the New Year in the city and be part of the Sugar Bowl. She said past national champions have gotten to stand on the sideline at the Sugar Bowl.Jarrett said she is pleased with the amount of teams LSU has representing the school and also that a few LSU student workers get to officiate the games.”I’m also excited that we have student employees here working and learning to officiate at a higher level,” Jarrett said. “They bring that back to our program, and hopefully our program will get better and better.”The ACIS Flag Football National Championships, which started Sunday, is a four-day tournament hosted by the University of New Orleans. The championship games of each division will be played in City Park at Pan American Stadium on Wednesday.
