The Faculty Senate unanimously approved Wednesday a new resolution about a possible appointment of a faculty representative to the LSU System Board of Supervisors.
Senate President Bill Daly, chemistry professor, said after hearing Student Government’s initiative to have a student representative placed on the Board of Supervisors, he wanted to see the faculty do the same.
On March 8, the Student Senate voted to request the addition of a student representative as the member-at-large to the board. Although there is a student representative on the board who serves a one-year term, this new addition would create a six-year term.
The LSU System Council of Faculty Advisors composed the Faculty Senate’s resolution. They distributed it to faculty senates throughout the LSU System with hopes of having it amended and ultimately sponsored by state representatives and senators for the 2006 regular legislative session.
In the council’s letter to Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s office, it noted that the LSU System student bodies already have voting representation on the LSU Board of Supervisors, and they believe the presence of a faculty representative would enhance the potential of a student representative.
“Like in a gumbo, it’s good to have some meat. Faculty are the essential meat in that gumbo,” said Wayne Gauthier, associate agricultural economics professor.
The Faculty Senate is seeking an LSU System faculty member with an exceptional academic record to fill the currently vacant at-large seat.
