The Division I-A women’s basketball tournament bracket will be announced at a different time this season.
The women’s field of 64 will be released tonight at 6 on ESPN, instead of Sunday.
“The women’s basketball committee and ESPN have been in discussions about Selection Monday for the past several years,” said Lynn Parkes, chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee, in a news release.
Parkes said the committee believes Selection Monday will help with the growth of women’s college basketball.
“We plan to utilize our assets to promote and develop what we believe is the next major college sports franchise,” said ESPN senior vice-president John Wildhack.
The 2004 tournament was ESPN and ESPN2’s most-viewed and highest-rated in the history of women’s basketball.
The record includes the 2004 championship game between Connecticut and Tennessee, which is ESPN’s second most-viewed men’s or women’s, college or professional basketball game in the network’s 25-year history.
