LSU dancers are stepping out of the practice room and into the bright lights of the LSU Union Theater stage – one sashe step at a time.
“We spent one semester preparing for this in class, as well as six to eight hours outside of the classroom,” said Molly Buchmann, director of the LSU Dance Concert and head of the LSU Theatre dance program. “Six student choreographers were chosen for their excellence in the choreography class from the fall semester.”
The concert will feature choreography from faculty in modern, ballet and jazz dance styles. The LSU Hip-Hop Coalition and the LSU Tap Dance Ensemble will make guest performances, and the show will feature a farewell performance by Kathleen Spinnazola, who has taught modern dance at the University for three years.
“There is a lot of talent in this group,” said Vastine Stabler, LSU Theatre marketing director.
Buchmann said the concert will feature dancers with a wide range of experience in dance.
“There are some performers who just discovered dance in college, some who have trained their whole lives and professional ballerinas,” Buchmann said.
Stabler said this range in talents will deliver a diverse show.
“There’s a little bit of everything,” Stabler said. “There is really a lot of variety where you watch it go from style to style to style.”
The talents are not the only diverse part of the concert. Stabler said there is a wide range of music selected.
“The dances are choreographed to all types of music – from Otis Redding to The Postal Service,” he said.
Stabler said Buchmann’s reputation in the community plays a large part in the yearly success of the show.
“Molly is so well known for her work throughout the community, so it is great she is the director of the event,” he said.
LSU Theatre is producing the event, which will take place in the Union Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. This is the second year the concert has taken place in the Union Theatre. The event was moved to the new location after previous smaller venues were continuously being sold out.
“This is a great opportunity for everyone to come out and enjoy dance on all different levels,” Stabler said. “There is a lot of creative talent to be seen.”
