Three days after their first road win against Tennessee, the LSU Lady Tigers won their second-straight game against a ranked opponent.
LSU defeated No. 13 Georgia (17-6, 7-3) 68-61 Sunday in the PMAC.
The Lady Tigers (21-1, 9-0) used eight consecutive free throws by Erica White in the last 80 seconds to hold off a last minute 3-point barrage by Georgia’s Janese Hardrick, who made four 3-point attempts in the final 48 seconds.
“I thought our ability to start the game and establish ourselves offensively was huge,” LSU coach Pokey Chatman said. “When you look at the final stats and you shoot almost 54 percent against a team like Georgia, it’s a tribute to our team staying true to the script.”
Sunday’s contest started at the same fast pace in which it ended.
LSU opened the game 5-of-7 from the field, but Georgia forward Tasha Humphrey would not let LSU break the game open early.
Humphrey, who shared last week’s Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors with LSU sophomore Sylvia Fowles, responded by hitting three consecutive 3-pointers.
“You have Sylvia Fowles down there so you know you’re not going to have the advantage on the low block,” said Humphrey, who finished with 18 points. “I tried to bring her out of her comfort zone to the perimeter.”
The Lady Tigers began to pull away at the 14-minute mark, after a Seimone Augustus jump shot sparked a 9-0 LSU run. Georgia then used a 9-2 run of their own to regain a 22-21 lead with 7:20 remaining in the first half.
The two teams traded baskets before Augustus converted a 3-point play to put LSU ahead 34-31 at the half.
The Lady Tigers would relinquish that 3-point halftime lead after enduring a 5:17 offensive drought to begin the second half.
Just as in the first half, it was an Augustus jump shot that started the Lady Tigers’ run.
The 12-0 run, highlighted by three consecutive shots by senior Florence Williams, put the Lady Tigers ahead 58-46 with 3:19 remaining and set up the run of free throws by White to seal the game.
With their fourth straight win over Georgia, the Lady Tigers recorded their 24th consecutive SEC regular season victory and 29th straight win at home, the nation’s longest active home winning streak.
