If you’ve been through Free Speech Plaza this week, you may have come across an interesting group of people dressed and acting like zombies. These “zombies” have been promoting “Zombie Day” to be held Monday at 5 p.m., at the Parade Ground. To complement the occasion, a Facebook event has been created detailing the rules of being a zombie. These include staying in character at all times and instructing participants not to harass people or cars. While we don’t necessarily have an affinity for zombies, we do think this event and the people behind it illustrate a larger point about the state of our campus community. It’s been a while since we’ve seen anyone take such a unique approach in the name of fun. In this space, we’ve covered many topics which are important to the campus community and the future of our University. As passionate as we’ve been on numerous issues, you’ve been just as passionate in your feedback and critiques of us. And that passion has been warranted. Over the past few years a multitude of serious issues have arisen, from Hurricane Katrina to the Confederate flag debate of last year to the debates about the proposed Freshman Residency Requirement and all things pertaining to Student Government this year. Ultimately, though, our collegiate experience should be a fun one. That fact often gets lost upon those who get caught in the day-to-day grind of campus events. And while we believe campus apathy is at an all-time high, we also believe creativity in the name of fun is at an all-time low. So we salute you, the originators of “Zombie Day,” and all students like you who are willing to be unique, kick back and have fun. We wish you all a Happy Halloween and hope you will take the opportunity to find your own unique way to have fun and create memories that will enrich your collegiate experience.
