Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Sigma Chi fraternity won first place in the Homecoming Lip Sync with their rendition of “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC on Tuesday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The performers dressed in Superman-like attire and rocked toy guitars. They also showed off some tumbling moves. Brittany Beckner, pre-law sophomore and Kappa Kappa Gamma member, choreographed the number and also performed in the dance. “The guys were amazing and got into it,” Beckner said. “All of our hard work paid off.” Jennifer LaFitte, elementary education sophomore and new member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, enjoyed performing at the competition. “I didn’t know what to expect coming into this, but it was so much fun,” LaFitte said. Chi Omega sorority, Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and Kappa Alpha Order placed second with their performance of “Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It” by Dem Franchize Boyz. Three teams tied for third place. Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Phi Delta Theta and Sigma Alpha Mu fraternities performed “Too Legit” by MC Hammer. Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Pi Kappa Alpha and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternities danced to “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” by C + C Factory. Pi Beta Phi sorority, Delta Chi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternities performed “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” by Panic! At The Disco. Four judges including University staff and alumni placed the teams according to creativity and choreography. The event ended with the Homecoming court’s performance of the song “Zero to Hero” from the Disney movie “Hercules.” The members dressed in yellow and gold togas. The 2006 Homecoming Committee organized the event, and Brittini Knox, communication studies senior, was the Lip Sync coordinator. “I thought the event went really well,” Knox said. “The teams put a lot of effort into the costumes, props and performances. My committee went above and beyond. I’m so proud of them.” Kurt Valvis, communication studies senior, and Brody Shores, industrial engineering senior, led the show by making jokes about campus figures and participants. They performed skits between dances, danced to songs and constantly changed costumes, including Superman spandex and tight red dresses. The pair said their favorite part was performing to Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings.” “It was great to help the Homecoming Committee,” Shores said. “The only thing we had to do was wear dresses, and we enjoyed it.” Travis Seaman, biological sciences sophomore and member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, watched the show with his fraternity and the sorority they are teamed with. “You could tell some of the groups really put a lot of effort into it,” Seaman said. “I enjoyed watching the ones who worked hard.” The Lip Sync is part of a week-long Homecoming celebration. Today is Spirit Day, and students are encouraged to wear purple and gold. The free Homecoming concert featuring Ne-Yo and Cherish is tonight in the PMAC. The pep rally is 6 p.m. Friday on the Parade Ground. On game day the Homecoming parade will roll through campus starting at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Cajun cook off at 1 p.m. in Free Speech Plaza. The Homecoming king and queen will be crowned Saturday at halftime during the Tulane game. Students can vote for king and queen this week on their PAWS accounts.
