Power outages were reported after the main transmitter line feeding electricity to the area crashed around 4 p.m.
The Daily Reveille has spoken with an Entergy representative who expects power to be back on within the hour. But the Baton Rouge Fire Department does not expect power to be restored for another two to three hours.
At least two incidents have been reported because the outages. Several students were trapped in an Evangeline Hall elevator for 40 minutes, and a facility services worker fell down darkened stairs. Classes on LSU campus were canceled for Wednesday evening, according to www.lsu.edu.
Power outages extend as far as Government Street to Brightside. Traffic pileups and accidents have occurred following the outages of traffic lights. Cell phones have also been affected.
