Students interested in working or studying abroad will soon have another tool to aid in getting the best programs and jobs. Career Services and Student Government have teamed up to provide students with free access to www.goinglobal.com, an international job market Web site. Students can access information about programs in more than 25 countries, including hiring trends, industry needs and cultural information for each location. “It’s an online resource for internships, part-time and full-time positions and information about different countries,” said Sara Crow, communications manager for Career Services. Students will be able to access the Web site by visiting the Career Services Web site. “It’ll click up as a PAWS login, and you’ll get access,” Crow said. SG is using money from the Coca-Cola grant to fund the Web site, making it free to students. Each year Coca-Cola donates money to the University for use by SG. Previously, SG used the money to purchase newspapers now funded by student fees. Crow said though the Web site is similar to job sites like monster.com, it’s also different because students can read information about the countries of potential employment on the site. “You just put in what you’re interested in, and it’ll give a list for you including application deadlines,” Crow said. Crow said the Office of Career Services hopes the site will make it easier for students to find international work opportunities. “It’s appealing because LSU students want to study abroad,” said Crow. “We think students [also] want to work abroad, but they don’t hear much about it.” SG President Chris Odinet said he thinks the site is a good use of money.
“Career Services approached us, and we were glad to help out,” Odinet said. Odinet said he thinks there is a real interest in the international job market and that students will benefit from the Web site. “A lot of students are interested in going abroad and getting a job abroad,” Odinet said. “Students who want to go abroad will really benefit from having this one-stop shop.” Career Services is also creating a Facebook group to facilitate career-related networking among students. The group is titled, “Career Services assists LSU students interested in working abroad.”
