The Office of Multicultural Affairs plans to bring minority University students and high school juniors together in the sixth annual Springfest.
Chaunda Allen, OMA director, said the office has two goals for Springfest.
“One goal is to provide safe and enriching activities for current students at LSU, and the second goal is to recruit outstanding high school juniors to LSU as they begin their college selection process,” she said.
Allen said 75 high school juniors from numerous Louisiana schools and one school in Texas plan to attend Springfest.
“Springfest is designed to showcase LSU to the best and brightest ethnic minority students,” she said. “Although Springfest is primarily for Louisiana residents, we do accept students from outside Louisiana.”
Allen, who organized the recruitment aspect of the weekend event, said OMA has planned for the students to take part in several activities on campus.
“The students will experience the academic, social and leadership opportunities available at LSU,” she said. “They will attend the retention activities and will also have seminars about the admissions, financial aid, what life is like at LSU and how to choose a major.”
Allen said the students will tour the campus and talk to senior college representatives to find out more about programs, majors and minors.
“We will also have a session for parents to give them information on LSU as well,” she said.
Allen said she wants Springfest “to highlight LSU in action.”
“We hope that these students will choose LSU and will become part of the fall 2008 incoming freshman class,” she said.
Late Night in the Student Union at 10 p.m. will feature music, an oxygen bar, free pizza, karaoke and several other activities.
Curtis Parker, OMA program coordinator, organized the Springfest Variety Show, which will be held in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. He said the Variety Show will feature dancing, poetry, music and an improvisation game. He said two comedians, Ronnie Jordan and Tony Roberts, will also perform.
Students who want to attend the Variety Show can purchase tickets at the Athletic Administration Building.
