JaMarcus Russell was the No. 1 NFL Draft pick of the Oakland Raiders today at the 2007 NFL Draft in New York.
The former Tiger quarterback is the second LSU football player to be the No. 1 pick, second to former halfback Billy Cannon in 1959.
It was no surprise as Russell was almost every expert’s No. 1 pick before the announcement.
At LSU, Russell threw the second-most touchdown passes in school history with 52. His 6,625 career yards is No. 3.
Each player ahead of Russell in the record books played four seasons, while Russell played only three.
Other LSU First Round Picks:
Former safety LaRon Landry was the No. 6 overall pick of the Washington Redskins.
Former wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was the No. 23 overall pick of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Former wide receiver Craig Davis was the No. 30 overall pick of the San Diego Chargers.
This was the first time in school history for four players to be drafted in the first round. The closest to that record was in 1951 when three players were drafted.
LSU Seventh Round Picks
Former defensive end Chase Pittman was the No. 213 overall pick of the Cleveland Browns.
