Pirate hats, eye patches and buckets of gold coins – these were the accessories of business student organization members Saturday morning around campus.
Pi Sigma Epsilon, the University’s marketing, sales and management fraternity, held a pirate-themed 5k race as part of their fundraising events this weekend. The race raised money for Best Buddies, an international non-profit organization whose goal is to increase opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.
About 30 students registered for the race, which wound its way around central campus through several pirate checkpoints. Runners received numbered, golden tokens at the checkpoints for use in a lottery following the race.
Anna Ichniowski, program supervisor of Louisiana Best Buddies, said she hoped to continue holding the race in future years.
“We’re really happy to be working with the business fraternity here,” Ichniowski said. “It worked out really well. It was a great corroboration.”
Later PSE also held a scavenger hunt to continue the treasure-hunting theme.
PSE switched to the University Recreation Center on Sunday to raise funds for itself.
The organization hosted a three-on-three basketball tournament featuring cash and gift certificate prizes for the top-ranking teams. The $200 first prize was won by The U, a team of three seniors who said they frequently play basketball together.
Scott Saylor, human resources management junior and PSE president, participated in the double-elimination tournament. He said he was proud of the hard work the organization put into the fundraising events.
“The whole team really worked hard on it,” Saylor said. “Everybody had a great time out here today.”
