LSU sophomore baseball player Chris McGhee was involved in a one-car accident Monday afternoon while driving on I-49. McGhee, who plays right field and second base for the Tigers, flipped his 1995 Jeep Cherokee four to five times after veering into the median and crossing into the southbound lanes. “I was putting my water bottle in my cup holder, and I ended up dropping it,” McGhee said. “And when I reached for it, I pressed up against my stick shift. My stick shift is kind of loose, and I pressed the car all the way from drive into reverse or neutral, and the car just went out of control.” McGhee was able to climb out of the car and walked away with cuts to the top of his right foot and left knee. He said the accident happened so fast that he does not remember much. “I don’t know how it happened,” McGhee said. “It was so fast and so unreal.” McGhee said his parents, Louis and Ollie McGhee, met him at the site of the wreck and took him to Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital for further examination. Sophomore catcher and roommate Robert Lara said McGhee seemed in shock Monday night and said his roommate was fortunate to come out with minor injuries “Good thing he was wearing a seat belt, man, because otherwise he would have been done,” Lara said. “He was a shaken up [Monday], but he’s a tough-ass kid.” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said McGhee will not play in today’s game against Southern University at Alex Box Stadium. He also said the team hopes McGhee recovers from any injuries. “We’re counting our blessing today,” he said.
