Chancellor Sean O’Keefe named Astrid E. Merget as the new executive vice chancellor and provost, according to a University news release.
Merget, who is the dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, will begin Aug. 1 pending approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors in July.
“I am delighted that Astrid Merget has agreed to become our new provost, as she is uniquely qualified to carry the banner of academic excellence at LSU,” O’Keefe said in the release. “The depth and breadth of her experience and contacts in the public, private and philanthropic sectors will position LSU to be even more competitive in obtaining research awards and accelerating our efforts toward achieving the goals of the National Flagship Agenda.”
Merget will replace Risa Palm, who resigned Aug. 18, 2006 after accepting a provost position at the State University of New York System.
Merget was chosen from a list of finalists that included Ronald Rosseau, chair of the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology; Harold Silverman, executive vice chancellor of Academic Affairs and interim provost and executive vice chancellor at the LSU; and Jeffrey Vitter, dean of the College of Science at Purdue University.
