The Chinese Students and Scholars Association plans to bring Chinese culture to the University.
The Chinese Culture Week and New Year Celebration kicked off a series of activities Monday that will educate University students about China and its unique culture.
“We want to introduce our culture and communicate with other groups and cultures,” said Yanjun Xu, forestry graduate student and CSSA secretary general.
The CSSA plans to show several videos to educate guests about the various aspects of Chinese culture this evening in Lockett Hall. The videos will cover subjects including religion and art.
The CSSA will serve free coffee Wednesday night at the Common Grounds Cafe for its Chinese Corner event. Xu said the event is for people who are interested in Chinese language.
The CSSA will show a Chinese martial art film titled “Mo Gong” on Friday evening in Lockett Hall.
“The genre is an important part of Chinese movie art,” Xu said.
Xu said he is excited about the Chinese New Year Celebration Party on Saturday night in the Union.
He said the party is the most important event of the week because it celebrates the Chinese New Year and will include 23 performances. He said he expects more than 600 people to attend the party and enjoy the festivities.
“New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are the most important holidays in China, like Christmas is here,” said Xu, who is from the Jiangsu province in China.
