The Web site for the LSUPD opens with the Police Chief’s welcome from Ricky Adams — but not for long. Sid Gautreaux will be sworn in as sheriff of East Baton Rouge on Dec. 4, and Adams will be sworn in as chief criminal deputy. “Ricky [Adams] is the total package,” said Casey Rayborn Hicks, press secretary for sheriff-elect Gautreaux. “Sid has known Ricky for over 20 years and respects him both personally and professionally.” Adams began working for the University’s police department in 1983 after graduating from Louisiana State Police Basic Training Academy. Since then, he has worked his way up the ranks and was promoted to chief of police in September 2005. “Ricky has done a lot for LSU and will bring a technically savvy aspect to the sheriff’s department,” Hicks said. As chief criminal deputy, Adams will serve as a second in command to Gautreaux. He will oversee all sections of the sheriff’s department, which includes about 900 employees. During his 23-year tenure, Adams spearheaded projects such as the University’s emergency text messaging system and acquired computers for the University’s police department. “He was a great leader,” said Maj. Lawrence Rabalais, LSUPD spokesman. “His replacement will be determined in the next few days.” Adams could not be reached before press time.
