A little rain, muddy cleats and a wet football didn’t put a damper on Monday’s flag football intramural championships at the Student Recreational Complex. Three separate divisional champions were named, marking the conclusion of the flag football season that began in September with more than 130 teams. Team Dynasty claimed the overall men’s title, defeating Acacia fraternity, 21-7. Dynasty also won the tournament in 2006. But the highlight of the game was Acacia receiver Mark Penny’s one-handed grab after a monster leap in the end zone to prevent the shutout. Acacia had time to run just one more play before the mercy rule would be implemented. “We had to keep our dignity,” said Penny, construction management senior. “I told the quarterback, ‘If you can get it to me in the corner, I can out-jump [the cornerback].'” Van English, wide receiver and cornerback for Dynasty, said he was at a height disadvantage. “That’s what sucks about being 5’6 joked English, a finance senior. Dynasty had some fan support from mechanical engineering freshman Nick Shuman. Shuman’s team, the all-freshman team Off Constantly, lost 7-6 in the first round of the playoffs after a botched snap on a 1-point attempt. In flag football, a team can attempt a 1-point conversion from the 3-yard line, 2-point conversion from the 10-yard line or 3-point conversion from the 20-yard line. “Dynasty has all the talent in the world,” Shuman said. “We were just kids playing football.” In the sorority championship, Kappa Delta defeated Zeta Tau Alpha by an 18-12 score in overtime. The outcome required an 18-0 run by Kappa Delta, as Zeta Tau Alpha led 12-0 at halftime. Katie Ellis, a business sophomore, scored Kappa Delta’s winning touchdown on a run down the left sideline. “I really didn’t know if I was going to make it,” Ellis said. “But it wasn’t just about me. The whole team did awesome.” Lauren Simoneaux, petroleum engineering junior and quarterback for Zeta Tau Alpha, said Kappa Delta’s defensive coverage limited her team’s offensive production in the second half. Simoneaux said she was disappointed Ellis scored in overtime for the win. “I just took the wrong angle,” Simoneaux said. “I thought I had her.” Dunkin’ Donuts defeated Big Guns 22-2 in the co-recreational division. Dunkin’ Donuts team captain Zane Kirby said his team never gave up a touchdown during the entire season. Kirby said his team’s strategy was to carefully study the co-recreational rules, which require female players to touch the football on every other play. He said they frequently used female players for short passing routes. “The only way we won was because we have great girls on our team,” said Kirby, kinesiology senior. Matt Kalcevich, assistant director of sports clubs and intramurals for the UREC, said this year’s number of participants was the highest in at least four years. Kalcevich said winners in each division will represent LSU at the Louisiana Collegiate Intramural-Recreational Sports Association this weekend.
