Student Government Elections Commissioner Jacob Gower announced the fall election results Thursday in the Student Union. The elections determined 16 contested Student Senate positions. These positions included five full seats from the College of Arts and Sciences and two full seats from the E. J. Ourso College of Business. Also decided were seven full seats and two half seats from the University College Center for Freshman Year. Full Senate seats are elected annually, while half seats are up for re-election every fall and spring. Taking Action is the only ticket that formed during this fall’s election. According to its Facebook.com group, the ticket aims to strengthen the accountability of SG. Taking Action endorsed 16 candidates: one for each of the available Senate seats. Though Taking Action candidates captured three-quarters of the available positions, four seats escaped their grasp. Incumbents also fared well, with only one of 11 returning senators failing the bid for re-election. Of 14 initial candidates for the UCFY full seats, three were disqualified for failing to properly file election expenses. Other Senate and University Court positions were up for contention this fall, but not enough candidates applied for elections to be held. Because not enough candidates signed up, there are some positions which remain unfilled. These include Senate positions from the College of Art and Design, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the Graduate School and the University Center for Advising and Counseling. These positions may be filled by their respective college councils.
