Seniors Tiffany Tucker and Anastasiya Dubova pulled off an improbable upset Saturday, beating the 24th ranked duo of sophomore Laura Vallverdu and freshman Michaela Kissell of Miami, 9-7, in The Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.
Tucker did not have similar luck during Saturday’s singles competition. She was defeated by junior Elizabeth Lumpkin of UCLA, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, marking her second consecutive loss of the weekend.
Despite her two losses, LSU assistant coach Lisa Jackson was encouraged by Tucker’s play.
“I was particularly impressed with Tiffany [Tucker],” Jackson said in a press release. “Her hard work over the summer paid off, and it showed in this tournament.”
LSU freshman Kylie Adamek won her only match Saturday, defeating freshman Victoria Tessmarr of New Mexico, 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-6, in a super tiebreaker.
All three Lady Tigers saw action in Friday’s opening round with Tucker and Dubova providing the highlights of the singles competition.
Both players bounced back from early defeats to win consolation second-round matches. Tucker defeated junior Jana Mackova of Boise State, 6-3, 6-2, while Dubova took down senior Jennifer Ryba of New Mexico, 7-5, 6-2.
“The girls showed some good fight in the second-round matches,” Jackson said after Friday’s competition. “Overall, it was a satisfying day.”
The Lady Tigers will take to the courts again Oct. 18 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regionals held in Lubbock, Texas.
