PERRILLOUX SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY FROM FOOTBALL TEAM
LSU backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has been suspended indefinitely from the football team after trying to enter Hollywood Casino in Baton Rouge using his brother’s identification.
Sports information director Michael Bonnette confirmed the suspension May 22 and said LSU coach Les Miles has not yet determined when Perrilloux will rejoin the team.
The highly-touted recruit from East St. John High School has also been involved in a local money counterfeiting ring investigation but has since not been arrested in connection with that incident.
Perrilloux played in five games this past season and completed one pass for 10 yards.
FORMER LSU FOOTBALL PLAYER MARQUISE HILL FOUND DEAD IN LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN
Former LSU and New England Patriots defensive end Marquise Hill’s body was found May 28 in Lake Pontchartrain after Hill and a female companion were involved in a jet-ski accident.
The woman was able to hold onto a pylon after the pair fell into the lake, which had a strong current at the site of the accident.
“We have suffered a stunning and tragic loss,” New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a written statement. “Marquise will be remembered as a thoughtful and caring young man who established himself as one of the year-round daily fixtures of our team. I send my deepest condolences to the Hill family.”
Hill was a member of LSU’s 2003 national championship team and was a key reserve for the Patriots after being selected in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft.
Many current and former Tigers attended Hill’s funeral June 2 in New Orleans along with Belichick and current Alabama coach Nick Saban.
The Tiger Athletic Foundation has started the Marquise Hill Memorial Scholarship to supplement current student-athletes scholarships.
FALCON REACHES HIGHEST RANK IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Sophomore Megan Falcon ended her singles’ season with the highest ranking in school history at No. 2 after falling to No. 6 Lindsey Nelson of the University of Southern California, 7-6 (2), 6-2, in the NCAA Singles Semifinals at the University of Georgia.
“I am definitely not satisfied with my result,” Falcon said in a news release. “I wish it could have been different. Hopefully I can come back next year and do a little better.”
Falcon and freshman Hannah Robinson ended their doubles season ranked No. 35 after losing in the opening round to Maria Anisimova and Kate Kosminskaya of the University of Pennsylvania, 6-4, 6-4.
The No. 36 Lady Tigers tennis team ended their season falling to No. 22 Duke in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament 4-1.1
MEN’S TENNIS RUN ENDS IN ROUND of 16
The LSU men’s tennis team’s first loss of the year came from the same team who handed them their last. No. 15 LSU (18-7) fell in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 16 to No. 2 Ohio State University, 4-0.
Senior Ken Skupski ended his last season ranked No. 20 after falling in the NCAA round of 16 in the singles tournament.
The No. 6 doubles team of senior Danny Bryan and junior Colt Gaston had their tournament run halted in the quarterfinal round after falling to the defending doubles champions and eventual runners-up duo of Kyle Anderson and Ryan Rowe of the University of Illinois.
The team will have to replace three seniors in No. 20 Ken Skupski, No. 40 Danny Bryan and Eric DeRoche.
“We have no regrets about this season,” LSU coach Jeff Brown said in a press release. “We accomplished a number of things and our three seniors are leaving this program in better shape than when they arrived.”
SOFTBALL TEAM FALTERS IN NCAA SUPER REGIONALS
LSU fell 7-4 to Arizona State University in game two of a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional series, marking the second-straight season the Tigers have fallen just short of reaching the Women’s College World Series.
The Tigers (55-12) faced an up-hill climb to begin the tournament when they were sent to Palo Alto, Calif. in the regionals despite being a No. 10 national seed and SEC Tournament Champions. LSU defeated California State University (Northridge), Fresno State University and Stanford University to advance to the Super Regionals. But the Tigers lost their first two games against the Sun Devils including a 1-0 loss in 10 innings in game one.
“The bottom line is we needed home field advantage in this series,” LSU coach Yvette Girouard said in a news release.
BASEBALL TEAM MISSES OUT ON SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
LSU did not advance to the Southeastern Conference tournament for the first time in 22 years in coach Paul Mainieri’s inaugural season at LSU.
The Tigers (29-26-1) had a chance to sneak into the eight-team tournament but were swept at Vanderbilt in the final regular-season series. The loss also helped keep LSU out of the NCAA tournament for the second-consecutive season. “I think the fact that we were still alive for a bid to the tournament on the final day of the season says a lot about the way our kids competed this year,” Mainieri said. “I feel like in a lot of ways we overachieved this season, and I’m very proud of our players for the effort they gave throughout the year.”
