N.C. State withstood multiple runs from North Carolina A&T on Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum — earning the Wolfpack its first win in more than two weeks.
Senior forward Khadijah Whittington had her 10th double-double of the season when she totaled 21 points and 14 rebounds in State’s 75-61 win over North Carolina A&T.
Aside from the post players, coach Kay Yow said she was impressed with the way her guards penetrated and put points on the board.
Yow said she was pleased with the way her team “got to the basket” and created scoring opportunities.
Sophomore guard Nikitta Gartrell finished the game with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She also tallied seven assists while not having any turnovers.
She said she’s been working on her shot selection and creating more opportunities for her teammates.
Gartrell said it’s an advantage to have shooting guards who can knock down the outside shot – like redshirt freshman Megan Zullo.
Zullo finished the game with 15 points – all from behind-the-arc, where she went 5-of-6 for the afternoon. Her final two baskets came with less than three minutes remaining in the game and within 15 seconds of one another – while extending the team’s lead from 16 to 22.
Next up for State is Mississippi on Dec. 21. Mississippi advanced to the Elite 8 last season, and Yow said the opponent should give the team a good idea where it stands going into ACC play.
