BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — One month after the Department of Social Services launched a public awareness campaign about Louisiana’s Safe Haven law, a mother took advantage of it to safely leave her baby at a Lake Charles hospital.
The 6-day-old boy, who is in good health, was handed over to workers at Women’s and Children’s Hospital around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The department’s Lake Charles Office of Community Services received a call on Tuesday from someone inquiring about the law. A call was later received at the hospital verifying that it was a Safe Haven site.
Social Services Secretary Kristy Nichols says when a parent is faced with an incredibly difficult choice, the safe haven law protects a child’s life and prevents prosecution of the parent.
