LSU’s bats came back alive as the Tigers answered South Carolina’s four home runs last night with three of their own today in a 10-3 victory against the Gamecocks.
The victory marked the 11th time the Tigers have scored 10 or more runs this season. It was the first time in seven games the Tigers reached the 10 run mark after reaching the mark in 10 of their first 13 games.
LSU had 20 games all of last season of 10 or more runs.
Senior Louis Coleman got the start on the mound for the Tigers. He went seven innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs while striking out eight in his third start this season.
Junior right fielder Jared Mitchell led off the game with a single and later scored on a single by senior left fielder Chris McGhee to put the Tigers up early, 1-0.
McGhee later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Sean Ochinko to give LSU a 2-0 lead.
South Carolina answered in the bottom of the first on a single by junior left fielder DeAngelo Mack to score freshman right fielder Jackie Bradley, Jr. to bring the score to 2-1.
South Carolina tied the score at two in the bottom of the second.
Mitchell answered in the top of the third with a home run, his fourth of the season, to put LSU up, 3-2. He finished the day 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored.
The Tigers added on two more home runs in the fourth. Sophomore catcher Micah Gibbs blasted a two-run shot to right field and junior second baseman Ryan Schimpf added on a solo homer to put LSU up, 6-2.
LSU scored two more runs in the top of the sixth. Ochinko scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore center fielder Leon Landry, and Gibbs scored on a RBI single by freshman third baseman Tyler Hanover.
South Carolina senior third baseman Andrew Crisp hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Tigers’ lead to 8-3.
LSU got that run back in the top of the eighth when Landry got his second RBI of the day by hitting a single to score Gibbs and put the Tigers up, 9-3.
Ochinko added on his second RBI of the day when he singled to score Mitchell in the top of the ninth to put LSU up, 10-3.
