As LSU’s varsity basketball teams gear up for postseason play, intramural basketball teams at the University Student Recreation Complex are amid their own playoffs. The single-elimination tournament began Tuesday and will conclude next week.”It’s getting serious,” said Mathis Walker, business freshman. “A lot of blood, sweat and tears going into the game.”The Hot Tomales (co-rec), Kappa Sigma C (fraternity), Smooth Operators (men) and Zeta Tau Alpha (women) were the top seeds going into the playoffs, but other teams still have a chance to claim the crown.”There are a lot of teams,” said Gibbons Addison, history senior. “It could be anybody.”In the co-rec division, No. 8 Dunkin Donuts defeated No. 1 Hot Tomales, 52-38, on Tuesday night. There was also an upset in the men’s division Wednesday night when No. 1 Kappa Sigma C lost to No. 16 Acacia B, 43-31. Dunkin Donuts, NSBE, Team Tyma II and the Honeybees are the co-rec teams that remained entering Thursday night. Thirteen teams are still in the running in the men’s division, while nine fraternity teams remain, as of Thursday afternoon. The men’s open winner will play the fraternity winner March 12 to determine the overall men’s champion. The eight women’s basketball teams began playoffs Thursday night.Teams compete for the championship on the outdoor UREC courts and University High School’s gymnasium. The outdoor courts received mixed reviews from the teams. Some feel playing on cement gives basketball a more streetball feel, while others prefer the comfort of the hardwood.”I like playing inside better,” Addison said.It is uncertain if the champions of each division will be able to compete in the regional tournament since the playoffs were delayed from Mardi Gras. Matt Boyer, UREC assistant director of leagues and tournaments, said the teams would be responsible to pay everything besides the entry fee. Soccer playoffs have also begun and will conclude in two weeks.Registration for tennis, flag football and racquetball begins March 9.——Contact Michael Lambert at [email protected]
